Recovery Night

January 14, 2014

At this month's Recovery Night, The Emily Program will host Shannon O'Donnell and

Marta Wenker.

Marta believes that recovery is not a linear process, but rather, it is a waltz: two steps forward, one step back, turn. The dance can be beautiful and graceful, or clumsy and stuttered, but the important thing is to keep moving.  Marta recently became engaged to her best friend and soul-mate. She also recently completed her International MBA from the University of San Diego, and works as a Client Executive at IBM.

Date: January 14

Time: 6:30-8:00PM
2265 Como Ave, lower level, St. Paul, MN 55108

Recovery Night is a night of inspiration and hope, and occurs the 2nd Tuesday of every month. This is a free event that is open to the community.

5 Tips for Setting Realistic New Year's Goals

By Sina Teskey, R.D., L.D., The Emily Program

January, a month filled with credit card bills and new resolutions. It can be difficult finding a New Year's resolution that you can stick with for 12 months, or even better, for life. In a fast paced world where we set high expectations for ourselves -- being healthy is about mind, body and spirit; mental health, loving yourself and stress management are all important. I encourage you to follow these steps if you want to set a focus for the New Year.

  1. First, think about your life as a whole. What areas are you satisfied with and what can you work on. Most people focus on food and changing themselves, but we can often benefit more from focusing on loving ourselves and our body the way it is.
  2. Next, set a realistic goal that requires a small change instead of a large shift that may not last.
  3. Write it down! I remember my dad reading me a study done by Harvard back when I was in high school that confirmed graduates who wrote down goals with time frames to achieve them were more likely to reach them and had higher salaries than classmates who didn't. Give yourself that physical piece of paper that states what you are working toward.
  4. Have a game plan for how you'll reach your goal and enlist support from friends and family.
  5. Lastly, give it time. Lifestyle changes don't become habits overnight.

Wishing you all a year of happiness and good health (mind, body and spirit!).
