Our Programs
Eating disorders happen to adolescents and adults (both male and female) of all ages, walks of life and situations. Our personalized approach to treatment helps individuals challenge and change thoughts and behaviors that prevent them from having a positive relationship with food, their bodies and themselves.
Together we will develop a flexible and unique treatment plan that fits your needs and is informed by research, community standards and sound clinical judgment. We are here to walk with you on your journey toward a more hopeful, healthful and fulfilling life. Call us at 651.645.5323 (1.888.Emily77) to get started on the right plan for you, created from the following variety of services:
Assessment Services
Your journey begins with a thorough personal assessment so we have a clear sense of the problem and can develop a plan to best fit your needs. (In addition to eating disorder assessments, we also offer pre-surgical psychological assessments for individuals considering bariatric surgery.)
Individual Therapy
The relationship between a client and his or her individual therapist is at the heart of change. Together you will explore underlying emotions and interpersonal factors that contribute to your eating disorder, and learn to replace uncontrolled behaviors and negative feelings with a strong sense of self and a positive self-esteem. Our therapists are as individual as our clients. They are trained in diverse therapy theories and techniques. Great care is taken to match clients and families with therapists well-suited to meet their needs.
Group Therapy and Support Groups
The sharing of common experiences helps clients alleviate feelings of shame and isolation. Our outpatient groups are designed to break barriers and inspire self understanding as clients learn to identify unhealthy patterns and develop healthy alternatives. A wide range of groups is available at multiple locations across The Emily Program.
Multifamily Saturday Group
Information, support, stories of recovery and a therapeutic eating opportunity are offered at weekly Saturday groups. These groups meet at our St. Paul location and are open to families and friends of individuals receiving services at The Emily Program.
Adolescent Services
No two adolescents are alike. Neither are their eating disorders. The Emily Program’s therapists and dietitians are experts when it comes to helping adolescents – and their families – gain control over their eating disorders by building a strong sense of self and other skills they’ll need on the road to a whole and healthy adulthood.
Complementary/Holistic Services
We believe in treating the whole person. Across our programs, we incorporate yoga, body image group, art therapy, music therapy, cooking group, meditation/mindfulness group, massage, acupuncture and spirituality.
Nutritional Evaluation and Counseling
Our registered dietitians help people develop mindful, nourishing eating patterns through education and behavioral self-management. Nutritional counseling, education, and meal planning are tailored to each client’s needs to help interrupt symptom use and regain trust in the body’s ability to regulate eating.
Family and Couples Therapy
Long-standing patterns of communication between family members are explored and improved in family therapy sessions. These sessions provide awareness of common issues and roles and help the individual with the eating disorder to recover. Affected family members also receive support.
Family-Based Treatment
Family-based treatment offers an opportunity for families to be intensively involved in the rehabilitative process of decreasing eating disorder behaviors and reestablishing regular eating and activity patterns. Families work closely with the team to help their child achieve treatment goals.
Friends and Family Support Groups
Eating disorders affect far more than just the individual who is struggling with the illness. Parents, families and friends are strongly impacted and can be strong allies in the recovery process. Twice-monthly support groups are offered at multiple Emily Program locations and are free and open to all families and friends of individuals struggling with eating disorders.
Medical Services
Our physicians and physician assistants see clients on an ongoing basis for eating disorder-related complications, coordinating medical care with other members of the treatment team. Services include evaluations, lab work, EKGs, follow-up care and acupuncture.
Psychiatry Services
Our psychiatrists are a key part of our team and work with individuals regarding consideration of medications that may be incorporated into treatment of the eating disorder or related conditions. Psychiatry staff are involved in all Emily Program Intensive Programs and are available for individual outpatient sessions..
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
Intensive Outpatient Programs are designed for clients who require a more structured program to interrupt symptom use and develop balance in their relationship with food and their bodies or for clients stepping down from higher levels of care. We offer day and evening IOP options at multiple locations, which allows clients to continue everyday activities such as work or school. IOP includes three or four sessions during the week and a multi-family session on Saturday. Intensive Outpatient Programs combine group therapy, supported meals, experiential therapy, meal planning, psychoeducation and family therapy.

Intensive Day Programs (IDP)
Intensive Day Programs are designed for clients needing intensive treatment, support and structure to interrupt symptom use and develop balance in their relationship with food and their bodies. IDP can also be helpful for clients stepping down from inpatient/residential care. IDP is a 7 to 8 hour outpatient program which meets each weekday and includes a multi-family group on Saturday. IDP combines group therapy, supported meals, nutrition education and counseling, medical management, experiential therapy, meal planning and psychoeducation. Families and support persons are involved in the program through psychoeducation groups, family meals and family therapy.
