The Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are designed to provide clients with regular, structured group programming throughout the week to help interrupt their symptom use. IOP provides a step-up in support for individuals needing help with their goals of interrupting eating disorder symptoms or a step-down for those transitioning from a higher level of care. The Intensive Outpatient Programs are an ideal transition to aftercare treatment. The programs are flexible and allow individuals to continue their everyday activities such as work or school. The programs include three to five two to three hour sessions a week and include group therapy, supported meals, nutrition counseling, experiential therapy focusing on self soothing and coping skills, and a family group. Both day and evening programs are available, with separate groups for adults and adolescents. It is expected that IOP clients see an individual therapist weekly, medical doctor as directed, and attend weekly check-ins with the registered dietitian.
In addition, the Intensive Outpatient Programs emphasize maximal involvement of the individual's family and/or supporters. Family/support people are involved in a psychoeducation group which provides an understanding of the various components of the eating disorder, a meal at least once per week, and a group therapy session on Saturday.
Individuals participating in an IOP also have access to the many other outpatient options the Emily Program has to offer such as individual, group, family, and nutritional counseling and psychiatry services. The Emily Program is also willing to work with other community professionals including physicians, therapists, and dietitians to ensure appropriate aftercare treatment is provided.
