My 55 year old sister has lost considerable weight in the past 2 years and she exhibits some strange behaviors around food.  She is 5’3” and I’m guessing she weighs no more than 95 lbs.  Everyone in the family has expressed concern about her weight/health - amongst ourselves - but if anyone brings it up to her, she becomes angry and defensive and cuts off contact with them for weeks or months.  Family members include an elderly mother and father, 3 sisters (including myself), a husband,  3 sons, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, and one baby grandchild.  I’m convinced she has an eating disorder, but everyone else in the family vacillates:  yes, no, maybe.  The behaviors are so classically anorexic/bulemic,  I don’t know how there can be any doubt.  I worry about her, but I just don’t know how to proceed.  Do we have to wait until she “hits bottom” - ends up in the hospital - before we can convince her to get help?

Thank you for getting in touch with The Emily Program.  It sounds like you are going through a very difficult time right now and we want you to know that we are here for you and your sister if you need us.  If you are interested, we do offer intervention services called “conversation” with families and their loved ones to help talk about treatment options.  If you are interested in this please call one of our Client Care Coordinators (Kristen or Angie) at 651-645-5323.
