When can a few short phone calls change the course of history for people with eating disorders and their families?

Please join the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC) in a Virtual Action Day today to encourage the Senate to bring S2680, the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 to the Senate floor for a passing vote.

Why is the eating disorders community so passionate about this bill? Because it contains language from the Anna Westin Act, namely increasing training on early detection of eating disorders for health and school professionals as well as clarifying mental health parity language around access to care for the treatment of eating disorders. This expanded training and treatment access can save lives and increase the likelihood that someone gets into care early in their struggle with an eating disorder.

This bill contains numerous other provisions to promote the health and well-being of millions of Americans suffering with mental illness. Awareness of mental health as an important component of health is increasing and there is support for these reforms from both sides of the aisle.

Simply put, the time for mental health reform is now. A few minutes of your time can make a lifetime of difference for you, someone you love, or someone who needs help.

All you have to do is contact your Senators’ offices. The phone call is quick. The EDC makes it easy and quick to email or call your Senators. Dial the number, tell the person who answers that you want the Senate to bring the Mental Health Reform Act to the floor for a vote this September because eating disorders are an important issue to you. It’s as simple as that. They will say, “thank you for your call” and relay the message. The Senator will know this is an important issue to constituents. Please call both the Senators from your state.

One more thing, please ask others to do the same! The more our voices are heard, the more likely it is that change will happen.

We want to call the offices of ALL Senators, especially Senate Majority leadership and Senators in re-election campaigns. If any of these are your Senator, they are key to the bill getting voted on in September: Senators McConnell (Kentucky), Alexander (Tennessee), Ayotte (New Hampshire), Toomey (Pennsylvania), Kirk (Illinois), Johnson (Wisconsin), Burr (North Carolina), Rubio (Florida), Murkowski (Alaska), and Portman (Ohio). Also critical is Senator Minority leadership—Reid (Nevada), Schumer (New York), Franken (Minnesota), Klobuchar (Minnesota), Stabenow (Michigan), and Warren (Virginia).

Please, make the calls. We have the right to have our voices known in this country; please utilize it! Your voice is important and can make more of a difference than you can imagine. Let’s go change the world together!
